If you want a garden of colours that makes you smile every day, you should plant some verbena! These flowers are super pretty, and they bloom a lot, almost all the way from the beginning of the winter season to late spring. Whether you’re new to gardening or you’ve been doing it for a long time, verbena will be super easy and fun to grow.
Step 1: Finding the Perfect Spot
Verbena loves the sun a lot! They need to be in a place where they can get sunshine for at least 6 hours every day. Make sure the place you pick doesn’t stay wet and mushy after it rains. If your soil is kind of heavy and sticky, mix in some compost to make it just right for planting. If you’re using pots, check that they have holes at the bottom so water can drain out.
Step 2: Time to Plant
Now that you’ve picked the best sunny spot, it’s time to plant your verbena. If you’re putting them in the ground, use a tool to make the dirt loose and mix in some compost to make it extra nice for your flowers.
Dig a little hole for each verbena when you're ready to plant. Make sure it’s a bit bigger than the plant’s roots. Carefully take your plant and put it in the hole.
Fill the hole with more soil and pat it down softly with your hands. Give it a good drink right after planting using a watering can so the roots are not displaced. Remember, they need space to grow pretty and healthy, so plant them 10 to 12 inches apart.
Step 3: Watering and Feeding
Verbena isn’t too picky about water, but it does like to drink regularly, especially when it’s really hot. Touch the soil with your finger; if the top is dry, it’s time to water them. Just make sure you don’t make the soil too wet.
Your verbena will also need some food to grow big and strong. Give them a little bit of plant food every few weeks during the growing season. This will help them make lots of pretty flowers.
Choose a fertiliser rich in phosphorus, such as NPK or bonemeal, to encourage flower growth.
Step 4: Keeping Them Pretty
Verbena looks its best when you take care of it by removing the old flowers that are blooming. This helps the plant grow new ones. If you see any stems that are too long or look weird, you can cut them a little bit to help your plant grow better.
Step 5: Looking Out for Bugs
Sometimes bugs like aphids or spider mites might come and bother your verbena. If you see bugs, you can spray the plants with some water or a little bit of soapy water to make them go away. Also, watch out for signs of sickness, like spots on the leaves. If you see anything weird, take care of it quickly.
All Done!
Growing verbena is really fun and not too hard. They make your garden look like a rainbow with all their colours. Take good care of them, and they’ll make you happy every time you see them. So go ahead, plant some verbena, and watch your garden turn into the prettiest spot around!
