We must take care of our health with depreciating air quality these days. Due to various factors, the AQI levels are increasing rapidly, and the city has become akin to a toxic chamber. Our best bet to protect ourselves and our families is to go the natural way during these times. Plant more, and turn your homes into green havens of fresh air. This blog will discuss the most effective air-purifying plants for a thriving indoor garden safe for your family to breathe in.

Areca Palm

The beautiful Areca Palm, also known as the ‘Butterfly Palm’ due to its falling leaves in the shape of a butterfly taking flight, is an excellent houseplant. It is a super air-purifying plant, working steadily to clean indoor air of pollutants and releasing oxygen-rich air. Additionally, the plant has a tropical vibe to it, which will enhance your interiors.

Care Tips

  • The plant loves to receive indirect bright sunlight, so place it near a window or a location with ventilation and a sunlight source.
  • It loves well-draining soil.
  • Water when the topsoil is completely dry.
  • Misting it will help clean its leaves of any dust accumulation.

Rubber Plant

The Rubber plant is a gentle wonder of the indoor family of plants. It is stunning to look at, with big dark green leaves that are perfect for cleaning the indoor air in your home. It absorbs harmful pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and many more that hang and are suspended in the air.

Care Tips

  • Find a cosy spot near a window or in a well-ventilated area where it can soak up indirect bright sunlight.
  • It loves well-draining soil, although slightly moist.
  • Prune the plant to encourage branching.
  • Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth in 15-20 days to remove accumulated dust.

Spider Plant

NASA recommends the spider plant for its amazing air-purifying benefits. The variegated leaves of the plant fall like a fountain around it (they are called fronds). It looks gorgeous and can be grown in pots on the floor or even in hanging baskets. It is a small plant but grows vigorously—a cute little wonder!

Care Tips

  • The plant loves to be in a shady spot in a well-ventilated area.
  • It loves well-draining soil. Add cocopeat or perlite to it if you are growing it in a hanging basket
  • Water when the topsoil is completely dry.
  • Prune the plant regularly to encourage more growth. If you are lucky you will eventually see it growing beautiful white flowers.

Money Plant

Any indoor garden is incomplete without a Money plant, also known as Pothos. It is a versatile plant, non-fussy in nature, and easily grows anywhere. There are many varieties, and the care requirements for all are the same. It is great at cleaning indoor air of pollutants, sitting innocently in a corner but always working to improve your health. It is lovely to look at, too, with its heart-shaped leaves in bright green colours. It is perfect for your indoor garden.

Care Tips

  • The plant can thrive in almost all lighting conditions. However, to make it happy, place it in indirect bright sunlight for a few hours once a week.
  • It loves well-draining soil.
  • Water when the topsoil is completely dry and flaky.
  • Misting it will help clean its leaves of any dust accumulation.

Snake Plant

The snake plant is the real winner of the indoor garden and almost thrives on neglect. With its upright leaves, it stands undefeated when it comes to cleaning indoor air and thriving in an indoor garden. It is a succulent plant with pretty variegated leaves that rise from the base. It comes in many varieties, from dwarf snake plants for your work desk to larger ones that can be the guardians of your indoor garden.

Care Tips

  • The plant is a low-maintenance wonder. It thrives anywhere, in all lighting conditions.
  • It loves well-draining soil. Add perlite to increase its porosity.
  • Water when the topsoil is completely dry, as the plant is succulent and needs watering every 4-5 days.

Conclusion

We are all in this together. Fighting air pollution is the need of the moment. By growing indoor plants, you are improving the environment for yourself and others. However small it may be, it has an impact on making our surroundings green and the air we breathe clean.

Happy Gardening!
