Essential Winter Gardening Tips for Indian Home Gardens

The winter season is upon us, and a chill is already in the air. Plant parents are mighty stressed about their plants this season, as the temperatures can be harsh, dipping low by the day. However, with a few easy care tips, you can ensure your garden thrives even during the cold winters. In this blog, we will discuss some of the essential ways you can prepare your garden for the oncoming months of grey.

.

Prepare Soil

Good soil quality will ensure that your plants receive proper nutrition and are equipped to handle tough weather. Begin by loosening the soil so that it gets ventilation and air can pass through. Aeration is important to maintain soil health because even though we regularly till the top layers of the soil, the deeper layers remain untouched for a long time.

Once you have loosened the soil, add organic compost and mix it well. This will improve the quality and texture of the soil and make it suitable for draining out excess water.

.

Sunlight

We often underestimate the wonders of a few hours of uninterrupted sun exposure. Remember when you were young and your ‘dadi’ or ‘nani’ used to insist on spending some time outdoors in the sun or even putting out long-kept clothes to freshen them up for the season? Well, sunshine is just like that for plants. It gives them energy to carry out their essential activities, such as photosynthesis. Even for soil, sunlight plays a significant role in disinfecting soil.

Remember to place your plants, especially vegetables and fruits, where they can receive the whole day’s sunlight.

Keep rotating the pot so that all parts of the plant get equal exposure to the sun.

.

Watering

Watering plants in the winter is a tricky business. Generally, the soil dries slowly as the temperature falls during the season, and watering must be reduced in the winter. Check for when the soil is parched and crumbly to the touch before watering. If you need help, stick your finger in the soil and check if it is dry. Also, during winters, be careful not to wet the foliage as it can damage the leaves since the water will not dry out fast.

.

Fertiliser

During the winter, plants go through a dormancy phase and concentrate on conserving their energy. Therefore, you do not need to fertilise your plants frequently; once every 40 days is a good practice. Also, read the instructions on the packet before using the fertiliser, as different manufacturers may have different concentrations of nutrients. When adding fertiliser, sprinkle evenly on the top layer of soil or mix it before potting a plant.

.

Conclusion

Winter is a great time to bring colour and cheer to your home with stunning flowering and foliage plants that will brighten the otherwise dreary surroundings. By following the tips mentioned above, we are sure your garden will thrive and be a conversation starter for all gatherings in the future.

Happy Gardening!
