Are self watering pots really good?
I'm a lazy gardener, and I'm pretty good at killing plants, even the hard to kill plants. Seriously, if there's a way to kill a cactus that doesn’t need much to grow, I've done it. My succulents? Let’s not even go there. Snake plants that are known to thrive in the most harsh environments can be killed by me (I have killed 4). Being a lazy gardener is difficult, especially when you have so many plants and it becomes almost impossible to know when to water and take care of them.
But then I found something that turned my killing spree around: self-watering pots!
The Magic of Self-Watering Pots: I Love These Pots! Here’s Why They’re A Game-Changer for Someone Like Me:
- They keep the soil just right: the pot has a section below that holds water, so the plant gets what it needs without any guesswork from me.
- They save time: I just fill up the water tank and forget about it for a bit. My plants get their drink, and I don’t fuss.
- My plants are healthier: No more over- or under-watering, which means my plants are thriving, finally!
- Reduced Maintenance: With self-watering planters, you don't need to water your plants as frequently as traditional pots. I water them less frequently, which is great when I'm out of town or just busy. I don’t worry about my plants drying out or getting too soggy. This reduces the time and effort required for plant maintenance, making them ideal for busy individuals or those who may forget to water their plants regularly.
- Suitable for various environments: Self-watering planters can be used in various environments, including indoor and outdoor spaces, making them suitable for a wide range of plants and locations.
- Long Lasting: These pots are tough and depending on the size of the pot and the plant in it, the self-watering pots can last for long durations without any intervention from you.
- Versatile: They come in lots of styles and colours. I’ve got one in my kitchen & a few in the living room!
- Aesthetic: It's not all about function; they look good while they work. My place looks great with them around.
How Do Self Watering Pots Work?
A self-watering pot uses a bottom watering technique. Now what is that, you may ask. Don’t worry, we won’t leave you hanging (unlike the hanging pots which also we have, by the way).
Bottom-watering technique is where the bottom of the plant is submerged in water to assist in easier soaking of moisture. This is much more beneficial than top watering as it prevents root rot. Secondly, because this method uses capillary action, the watering is more consistently spread through the soil as compared to top watering.
Can You Overwater With Self-Watering Pots?
That’s the beauty, you cannot underwater or over water with these smart pots. The plant gets a consistent water supply as per its needs or as and when the soil dries. This stability reduces the stress that plants may get from inconsistent water supply which could consequently hinder their development.
Switching to self-watering pots has made me enjoy gardening so much more. It’s no longer about the stress of possibly killing another plant. Now, I just relax & watch my green buddies grow. If you struggle with keeping plants alive, give these pots a try. You might just surprise yourself with how green your thumb can be!
